Gratitude- The Root Of Joy

I have a confession to make. I, Christina aka The Joyful Ginger, am a recovering pessimist. My greatest talent is the ability to imagine the worst case scenario in a situation-in a matter of seconds. If I was a cartoon character I would be the nerdy & anxiety filled Chicken Little-hands down. It was no surprise to me that my Enneagram is a 6.

I don’t know exactly when anxiety and negativity took up residence in my mind, but the earliest memory I have is calling 911 in the 3rd grade to tell them I was dying. Anxiety and depression are so familiar to me now, like an old friend who I haven’t spoken to in months but can pick up where we left off like no time has passed.

In therapy I have learned valuable tools that have changed my life, but none were as effective as gratitude. Well that is, except prayer. God even
commands us to combine gratitude and prayer in JOY.

“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:16-18‬

Practicing gratitude is a lot more than going around the table on Thanksgiving and stating what you are thankful for- it is something we must actively practice in order for it to be rooted in our lives.

In my research I have learned that the positive effects that gratitude manifests in our lives are the same as prayer. The two combined have been absolutely life changing.

Some mutual benefits of prayer and gratitude are:

  1. Increase in happiness
  2. Increase in self esteem
  3. Restored relationships
  4. Relieves stress

Thoughts are like seeds and our mind is fertile soil. If you let a thought sit in your mind long enough it will begin to root itself into your soul. Vines will sprout and stretch into every aspect of your life. Will these vines bear life sustaining fruit or suffocating thorns?

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

John‬ ‭15:5‬

Everyday we have choice to make about what we let grow in our minds. Remaining in Christ and pursuing gratitude has cultivated a joyful heart in this once pessimistic woman. That is why I am giving away a free 7 day gratitude and prayer journal. I designed this journal to be simple, practical, and thought provoking.
